New program expands health support for WA doctors

Tuesday April 1, 2025

The Office of the Chief Medical Officer (OCMO) and Doctors Health Advisory Services WA (DHASWA) are pleased to announce a grant funding agreement to expand health and wellbeing support services for WA registered medical practitioners. The Doctors’ Access Project commenced in late March 2025 and runs for 12 months.

Currently, many barriers prevent doctors and medical students from accessing acute and ongoing care from General Practitioners. Despite the DHASWA initiative of the Doctors’ Access Program, an online list identifying GPs and psychologists who prioritise medical professionals, these barriers persist.

Over the next 12 months, the project aims to enhance the recruitment and functionality of the Doctors’ Access Program, improve doctors’ health education, clinical support, and expand relationships with Private GP Practices, including the implementation of “Dr Friendly Practices” across metropolitan and regional WA.

DHASWA also provides a 24/7 Advice Line for doctors and medical students seeking advice on acute wellbeing or health issues. Within four hours, callers can speak to a doctor experienced in doctors’ health. When necessary, triage and referral to GPs, psychologists, psychiatrists, and occupational physicians ensure that medical professionals can access appropriate care. The most frequent recommendation from a call is to consult a General Practitioner within a week, emphasising the need to expand access to GP care.

Increasing the number of doctors across the state with a commitment and expertise in treating doctors will enhance the functionality of this vital health support for doctors and medical students.
