Members vote for modernised Constitution at AMA (WA) Special General Meeting

The AMA (WA) held a Special General Meeting (SGM) on Wednesday 2 April to consider important constitutional amendments aimed at strengthening engagement with our members, ensuring compliance with the Associations Act, and modernising the structure of our organisation.
We extend our gratitude to all members who participated, whether in person or by lodging a proxy. Your engagement is invaluable in shaping the future of the AMA (WA).
These constitutional updates mark a significant milestone, strengthening our governance framework while safeguarding the organisation to ensure stability and continuity.
The approved changes include:
- Enabling electronic attendance and voting at General Meetings, benefiting rural and regional members and those unable to attend in person;
- Extending AMA (WA) Executive Officers’ terms to two years;
- Embedding a new Member Code of Conduct and dispute procedures to better handle member issues;
- Clarifying Council terms and the requirements to stand for President and Vice President positions; and
- Modernising terminology, including adopting gender-neutral language.
These changes were initiated from issues raised by the Council, Board, and management over the past two years. The AMA (WA) Board’s Nominations, Remuneration, and Governance Committee has spent the past six months carefully reviewing each item, with input and consultation from an independent constitutional expert. The updates will provide a strong foundation for the AMA (WA) to continue its critical advocacy work, and enhance the relationship between members and the Association, enabling us to better represent, support, and advocate for doctors, patients, and the community.
