General Practice Group update – March 2025
Monday April 7, 2025
The GP Practice Group held its first meeting under the leadership of new Chair Dr Mary Wyatt and Vice Chair Dr Andrew Png on 12 March 2025.
The discussion focused on key issues affecting GPs in WA.
Medicare and Bulk Billing
Members raised concerns that the recent bulk billing incentive increase could push toward shorter consultations.
The AMA (WA) will advocate for higher Medicare rebates, particularly for longer appointments. A survey of GP members will be conducted soon.
Government Commitments
The group welcomed the Federal Government’s $8.5 billion health funding announcement and its focus on “modernised Medicare.” The Cook Government’s re-election was also noted, with key promises including simplifying ADHD care processes for GPs, new aged care hubs, and expanding “Ask GP” virtual consults.
ADHD Care & Training
Members raised concerns about gaps in ADHD training and considerable time needed for thorough ADHD consultations. Quality training is critical, and a new Clinician Assist Guideline will soon be shared for feedback.
Integrated Community Health Hubs
Concerns were raised about strategy documents failing to recognise GPs as specialist providers. The group emphasised that new community health hubs must complement, not replace, GP care, and would welcome better integration of state-provided resources such as social workers into general practices.
“Ask GP” Virtual Service
Updates on the “Ask GP” service were noted, which strengthened primary care and hospital links. The inclusion of General Paediatrics in the rollout was welcomed.
Aged Care Challenges
Members highlighted issues with current GP incentives in aged care, including financial disincentives for those managing fewer residents and administrative burdens due to My Medicare registration requirements. Proposed solutions include temporarily suspending chronic disease management obligations, upfront payments, and better system integration between aged care facilities and GP practices.
HealthLink Secure Messaging Costs
Concerns were raised over HealthLink’s new charges (~$250 per practice). The group agreed that the AMA (WA), RACGP, and WA Health should work together on a response.
