Changes to SSO representation in Coronial Inquests

Wednesday March 19, 2025

The Department of Justice has advised that, following a recent review of the Coronial Inquest Service, there will be a change in how the State Solicitor’s Office (SSO) handles the representation of individual employees. This change will take effect immediately.

From this point forward, if you are identified as a witness or potential witness in a Coronial matter, you will be presented with a Witness Acknowledgement Sheet. The sheet outlines the roles of SSO, the Coroner’s Court, and witnesses. Key points to note include:

  • SSO will no longer represent you in Coronial Inquests and will not provide legal advice or take instructions;
  • SSO can offer support in your capacity as a witness, including guidance on court procedures, giving evidence, and answering questions; and
  • You have the right to decline speaking with SSO, seek independent legal representation, or choose to represent yourself.

If you have any concerns, or would like further clarification on this change, please reach out to us at industrial@amawa.com.au. Alternatively, you can contact the Office of the Commissioner at 9264 6184 or commissioner@justice.wa.gov.au.
