Dr Danielle McMullen elected the new Federal AMA President

Thursday July 25, 2024

In the latest development for the Australian Medical Association (AMA), Dr Danielle McMullen has been declared the next President after nominating unopposed, marking the first unopposed leader since Dr Steve Hambleton. Dr McMullen, who is currently the Vice President, will bring her extensive experience and proven leadership to the role.

AMA (WA) President Dr Michael Page welcomed Dr McMullen’s appointment.

“I have worked with Dr McMullen for several years and know her to be passionate and savvy. She is a good choice for the role. I wish Dr McMullen well in guiding the Federal AMA through difficult times and fostering positive and productive relationships with the States and Territories for the good of all of our members,” Dr Page said.

Professor Steve Robson, the outgoing AMA President, praised Dr McMullen’s leadership and her ability to foster strong relationships within the healthcare sector, including with federal Minister for Health, Mark Butler.

“I am delighted to be handing over the reins to Dr McMullen, who has proven her mettle in her vice-presidential role for the past two years and as President of AMA NSW before this period,” Professor Robson said.

“Having worked with Dr McMullen so closely I can confidently say I can’t think of a better person to advocate for members, and all doctors on improvements to our health system.”

Dr McMullen expressed her readiness to represent all doctors across the health system, which faces challenges in areas such as general practice, public hospitals, mental health, and the private health sector.

“The AMA is the voice of the medical profession and the only group representing all doctors across the country of all specialities and stages of career. I’m ready to take on the challenge along with my colleagues,” she said.

Dr McMullen highlighted her commitment to enhancing Australia’s healthcare system by supporting doctors and health workers, investing in prevention and early intervention, and boosting investment in general practice.

“With an ageing population and increasing chronic disease, we need everyone in our healthcare system working together,” she emphasised.

“Patients need a usual GP working in a team to ensure they can access care when they need it, to prevent their illness deteriorating to the point they need to be in hospital. When patients do need hospital care, that care needs to be timely and well-coordinated.”

The upcoming AMA National Conference will see delegates electing a Vice President, with A/Prof Julian Rait and Dr Xavier Yu as the candidates. Delegates will also vote on introducing a two-month handover period for new presidents, with the new leadership team taking over from 1 October.
