Expanded AMA (WA) Awards honour outstanding health professionals

Tuesday October 15, 2024

The results are in, with the AMA (WA) acknowledging those who have done the most this year to reflect the values of the largest independent professional organisation for medical practitioners and medical students in Western Australia.

The AMA (WA) Awards were presented on Saturday night at MEDBALL, at the Ritz-Carlton Perth, in front of 250 guests, including Health and Mental Health Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson MLA, Liberal Leader Libby Mettam MLA, and Director-General of the Department of Health Dr Shirley Bowen. New categories were added for this year’s Awards.

AMA (WA) President Dr Michael Page reflected on the evolution of the Awards. “With these new categories, we can acknowledge contributions across our profession in a much more comprehensive way. Advocacy is what the AMA (WA) is here to provide, so an Advocate of the Year Award is very special and significant. Likewise, the AMA (WA) places great value in engaging with medical students. They represent the next generation of doctors, and we hope they will become lifelong AMA (WA) members and leaders in the profession.”

In 2024, we recognised recipients across six categories:

  • Hippocrates Award: Presented to Dr Greg Sweetman, this award honours a doctor who has made an outstanding contribution to health.
  • Junior Doctor of the Year (Dr Camille Michener Legacy Award): Presented to Dr Thomas Drake-Brockman, acknowledging significant contributions to the profession and community in areas such as teaching and education, leadership, wellbeing, and community service.
  • President’s Award: Presented to Mark Glasson, recognising a non-doctor who has made an outstanding contribution to health.
  • DHASWA Doctors’ Health Champion of the Year (Jonathan Morling Legacy Award): Presented to Dr Tim Bates, acknowledging a doctor who has done the most to champion the cause of doctors’ and medical student health in Western Australia.
  • Advocate of the Year Award (inaugural): Presented to Dr Ramya Raman, honouring a doctor who has shown remarkable dedication and leadership in promoting positive change and enhancing the wellbeing of their colleagues throughout the healthcare industry.
  • Medical Student of the Year Award (inaugural): Presented to Khin Sek Hnin, recognising a medical student who has made a significant and outstanding contribution as a future changemaker in the profession and in the community in areas such as education, advocacy, leadership and service.
