Join us at the Inspiring Australians’ Breakfast

Thursday August 8, 2024

Connect with Auspire – Australia Day Council WA and colleagues from the medical profession at a morning of informal networking and learning.

AMA (WA) members can enjoy discounted tickets to hear from Professor Georgina Long AO and Professor Richard Scolyer AO, the winners of the 2024 Australian of the Year Awards, who have saved thousands of lives from melanoma, known as Australia’s national cancer.

Less than 10 years ago, advanced melanoma was considered fatal. However, Georgina and Richard’s innovative immunotherapy, which harnesses the power of a patient’s own immune system, has transformed it into a curable condition. As co-medical directors of Melanoma Institute Australia, they are prominent media figures and strong advocates for sun safety and melanoma prevention.

In June 2023, when Richard was diagnosed with incurable grade 4 brain cancer, he and Georgina created a groundbreaking series of treatments inspired by their melanoma research. Richard became the first brain cancer patient globally to receive pre-surgery combination immunotherapy. By choosing an experimental treatment with the risk of potentially shortening his life, he has contributed to advancing brain cancer research and is aiding future patients. Richard has also garnered significant public attention by openly sharing his cancer treatment journey and progress.
