New Government, let’s get to work

Monday March 10, 2025

The AMA (WA) congratulates the Labor Party under Premier Roger Cook for its emphatic win at Saturday’s State Election.

Health and Mental Health accounts for about 30% of the State’s recurrent spending and is by far the biggest sector under the Government’s direction. As the largest independent professional organisation for medical practitioners, the relationship of the AMA (WA) with the government of the day is a vital one for the working conditions of doctors, and health outcomes for all Western Australians.

During the election campaign, the AMA (WA) advocated for its members’ – the doctors of this State – priorities to maximise WA’s health outcomes.

We look forward to working cooperatively with the Government to ensure our priorities are a major consideration in all deliberations. We supported many of Labor’s health-related election commitments during the campaign, and would encourage them to consider adopting some of those from the Liberal side that we also supported – for example, committing to rebuilding Royal Perth Hospital, and to the tri-location of tertiary-level obstetric, paediatric and adult services in Nedlands or Murdoch. Every Western Australian stands to gain from a healthy relationship between the Government and the State’s peak body for doctors.
