Positive news regarding the AMA Federation and AMA (WA)

Friday October 11, 2024

As you know, since 1 March 2024 AMA (WA) members have no longer been members of AMA Limited. Both the leadership of AMA Limited and the AMA (WA) recognised that this was upsetting, and have been working hard to reach a new agreement that would see this situation resolved.

It therefore gives us great pleasure to advise that the Boards of AMA (WA) Inc and AMA Limited have signed a formal agreement that will allow AMA (WA) doctors to be reinstated as full members of AMA Limited, and as such, the AMA Federation.

We know how important both organisations are to our collective members. AMA Limited advocates for doctors on the critical issues including Medicare funding, private health insurance and private hospitals, public hospitals, preventative health, aged care and eHealth. Equally, the role of the AMA (WA) is crucial – acting as the coal face support to members, and engaging with the State Government on multiple issues including industrial/employment agreements, state and public hospital funding, public health, rural health, infrastructure and workforce.

Together, the AMA federation covers all aspects of funding, regulation and support impacting you – whether you are a doctor in training, a GP, a non-GP specialist, and regardless of whether you are in the public or private sector. Recognising this, the new agreement is consistent with WA doctors being members of both organisations and will be consistent with the arrangements that AMA Limited has with other state and territory AMAs.

Full membership and services will be reinstated from Monday 14 October 2024.
