Telemedicine back pay worth thousands to DiTs

Tuesday January 7, 2025

The AMA (WA) IR team recently helped Doctors in Training (DiTs) across WA Health secure thousands of dollars in telemedicine recall back pay.

For some time, DiTs providing telemedicine advice had only been receiving the standard on-call allowance of $12.22. However, under the WA Health System – Medical Practitioners – AMA Industrial Agreement, practitioners are entitled to a recall payment at their base hourly rate for recalls that do not require attendance at the workplace. This clause covers situations where a practitioner is on-call for telemedicine services across multiple metropolitan hospitals, WA Country Health Service hospitals, and is also on-call for physical recall.

Despite meeting the requirements outlined in the agreement, these practitioners were being denied the recall payments they were entitled to. Following a thorough review and intervention by the AMA (WA) Industrial Relations team, it was determined that these DiTs were wrongly denied their rightful payments.

As a result of the AMA (WA)’s successful advocacy, practitioners across several Health Service Providers (HSPs) have now received back pay for the telemedicine services they provided. This back pay has amounted to thousands of dollars for each individual practitioner, impacting several departments within WA Health.

If you are a DiT or medical practitioner in need of support regarding employment matters, don’t hesitate to reach out to the AMA (WA)’s Industrial Relations team for guidance and assistance and submit an online IR query.
