Win for WA Doctors – Easter Sunday back pay confirmed

Thursday September 5, 2024

Thousands of doctors will soon start receiving back pay for entitlements owed for Easter Sunday Public Holiday.

In a significant win for medical practitioners across the State, the AMA (WA) has successfully advocated for the back payment of Easter Sunday public holiday entitlements, affecting 3,037 doctors.

This achievement follows extensive consultations and a statewide audit by Health Support Services (HSS), which revealed that many practitioners had not been paid in accordance with the WA Health System – Medical Practitioners – AMA Industrial Agreement.

After our notification to WA Health in May 2024 regarding the breach of the agreement and subsequent follow-ups, we can now confirm that back payments and leave credits will be processed as follows:

  • On 12 September 2024 for full-time practitioners; and
  • On 7 November 2024 for part-time and sessional practitioners.

WA Health is currently working with HSS to expedite payment for the 2022 and 2023 Easter Sunday public holidays. This includes a thorough review of historical rostering and pay rates for each affected practitioner.

The breakdown of affected practitioners is as follows:

  • Doctors in Training Full-Time: 1,721
  • Doctors in Training Part-Time: 193
  • Senior Practitioners Full-Time: 796
  • Senior Practitioners Part-Time: 186
  • Senior Practitioners Sessional: 141

While this process has been complex, with manual reviews of payroll information and individual rostering data done by HSS, the AMA (WA) remains committed to ensuring that all practitioners receive the entitlements they are owed. We’re expecting further updates on the 2022 and 2023 payments on Monday 16 September 2024.

This outcome highlights the critical role of the AMA (WA) in safeguarding the rights and entitlements of our members. We will continue to monitor the situation, and work closely with WA Health and HSS to ensure timely and accurate payments.

If you have any queries or concerns regarding your entitlements, please do not hesitate to contact the AMA (WA) Industrial Relations Team at industrial@amawa.com.au.
